South African government reaffirms solidarity with Cuba

Rustenberg, 7 January 2026. A seminar on international solidarity, organised by South Africa's Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Alvin Botes, was held as part of the activities commemorating the 114th anniversary of the African National Congress (ANC). Support for the Cuban cause against the blockade was not lacking in this context.

In his speech, the Deputy Minister referred to Cuba's commitment to international solidarity, which is not new, but rather the result of a historical tradition of helping those most in need. He cited as an example the presence of Cuban combatants in Angola, whose victories forced the apartheid regime to make concessions and, consequently, liberate Namibia and South Africa. ‘Without the resilience, dedication and commitment of the Cuban forces in Angola, South Africa's freedom today would not be possible,’ he said.

He also reiterated the ANC's support for Cuba in its just struggle against the US economic, commercial and financial blockade, which has caused so much damage to the Cuban economy and population.

Botes also referred to the cooperation programmes between the two countries, in particular the training of doctors and the provision of professional services in the southern country.

His heartfelt references to the teachings of Che Guevara marked a moment of particular significance for those present.

In turn, Cuban Ambassador Fakri Rodríguez Pinelo took the floor to reiterate the unwavering solidarity of the Cuban people and government with the sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, especially in the wake of the US military aggression, as well as with the Palestinian and Sahrawi peoples, causes that we will defend in all forums and in all parts of the world.

Rodríguez Pinelo expressed special recognition to the people and government of South Africa, as well as to the ANC, for their continued and firm support for Cuba and their condemnation of the US blockade.
