South African Provincial Legislatures debates touch on Cuba

Pretoria, February 28, 2026.- The wave of solidarity with Cuba in South Africa has even reached the provincial legislatures, where comrades and friends have raised their voices in defense of Cuban sovereignty and have spoken out against the United States' renewed aggression toward the island.

In the North West State of the Province Address (SOPA), Premier Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi highlighted the province´s historic relations with Cuba and mentioned the recent dispatch of 30 young people to study medicine on the island.

Similarly, Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane called in his SOPA speech for an end to economic sanctions against Cuba so that Cuba can rebuild its economy.

For his part, Western Cape opposition leader Khalid Sayed, from the African National Congress (ANC), criticized the provincial government's silence on Cuba and other just causes, noting that there has not even been a condemnation of the U.S. blockade against the Caribbean nation.

In Gauteng province, the head of the Working Subcommittees, Thulani Kunene, condemned Donald Trump's recent illegal sanctions against Cuba, referring to them as satanic, unjust, and in violation of international law. He reflected that these are measures designed to stifle the national economy and cause maximum suffering to the people. He also called for keeping “hands off Cuba” and increasing solidarity with the island in the country.

These expressions of solidarity reaffirm the strong and historic ties between our peoples and governments, forged in the struggle against colonialism and imperialism, and reiterate the South African people's support for the Cuban people in their struggle against US aggression.
