South African students applying for the Fidel-Mandela Scholarship Program.

Pretoria, 13 May 2026.—The Economic Counsellor at the Cuban Embassy, Yulian Reyes Caballero, took part in the preparatory session for the new students from Gauteng Province who will travel to Cuba soon as part of 2026 edition of the Fidel-Mandela Medicine Program.

The meeting, designed to guide the young people before their training trip, facilitated a direct dialogue in which an interest in Cuban culture, identity, language and traditions was evident. The Cuban representative emphasized the importance of solidarity, academic exchange and mutual respect as the pillars of this project.

The Fidel-Mandela Medical Program, which brings together the histories and values of two iconic leaders, is a tangible example of the historic cooperation between Cuba and South Africa. Since its inception, the program has trained numerous generations of South African healthcare professionals, contributing to the strengthening of the healthcare system in various communities and promoting access to qualified medical care.

The Embassy’s participation in preparatory activities such as those held today reaffirms Cuba’s ongoing commitment to training qualified healthcare personnel in South Africa and to deepening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
