The state senator for the 23rd district of the state of Alabama, Malika Sanders Fortier, addressed a letter to the National Conference of Black State Legislators urging that organization to promote access to US territory. Henry Reeve International Brigade in order to help eradicate deadly diseases such as cancer and diabetes, as well as promote that African-American students may be eligible and study at the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana.
According to a study posted on the US National Institutes of Health National Library of Medicine site, the projected number and percentage of adults diagnosed with diabetes would increase from 22.3 million (9.1%) in 2014 to 39.7 million (13.9%) in 2030 and 60.6 million (17.9%) in 2060. The number of people with diabetes aged 65 years and older would increase from 9.2 million in 2014 to 21 .0 million in 2030 and 35.2 million in 2060. The percentage of prevalence would increase in all race and sex groups, although black women and men would continue to have the highest prevalence percentage of diabetes, and black women and women of another race have the highest relative increases.
Another study referenced on the American Lung Association website notes that approximately every two and a half minutes, someone in the US is diagnosed with lung cancer, and every day, lung cancer claims more lives. While the disease remains the leading cause of cancer death among women and men, in the last five years, the survival rate has increased by 14% nationally to 23.7%, but remains significantly lower between communities of color at 20% and African Americans at 18%.
