Statement of the Association of Cuban Residents in Ireland “Ernesto Che Guevara”

The Association of Cuban Residents in Ireland “Ernesto Ché Guevara” condemns the interference of the United States embassy in the internal affairs of Cuba, whose heroic people finally achieved their independence and sovereignty in 1959.

At the same time, the Association demands the lifting of the blockade against our people maintained, precisely, by the country that this embassy represents.

The blockade and the unjust inclusion of Cuba on the List of Countries Sponsoring Terrorism directly affect all Cubans, wherever they live.

On April 6, 1960, Lester D. Mallory, Assistant Vice Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs, in a secret State Department memorandum defined: “The majority of Cubans support Castro… the only foreseeable way to reduce his internal support is through the disenchantment and dissatisfaction arising from economic malaise and material difficulties... all possible means must be quickly employed to weaken the economic life of Cuba... a line of action that, while being as skillful and discreet as possible, will achieve the greatest advances in depriving Cuba of money and supplies, to reduce its financial resources and real wages, provoke hunger, desperation and the overthrow of the Government."

This North American strategy, denounced and condemned by the overwhelming majority of the international community, has not changed.

The Cuban people, who deserve peace and prosperity, resist and will win.

Down with the blockade!
