STATEMENT FROM THE BELIZE–CUBA SOLIDARITY GROUP In Response to the U.S. Presidential Memorandum on Cuba

The Belize–Cuba Solidarity Group strongly condemns the recent Presidential Memorandum issued by U.S. President Donald J. Trump, which intensifies the economic blockade against the Republic of Cuba. This measure, a revised version of the 2017 National Security Presidential Memorandum No. 5, represents a renewed act of aggression aimed at deepening the hardships faced by the Cuban people and undermining their sovereign right to self-determination.

We echo the Cuban government’s position that Cuba poses no threat to the United States, does not sponsor terrorism, and should not be punished for choosing a different political and economic path. The memorandum’s stated goals of promoting democracy and human rights are contradicted by its coercive nature and its devastating impact on the daily lives of millions of Cubans.

This policy violates international law and defies the will of the global community, as expressed in the overwhelming annual votes at the United Nations General Assembly calling for an end to the blockade.

Cuba has stood in solidarity with Belize through medical cooperation, educational opportunities, and humanitarian support. In return, we reaffirm our unwavering support for the Cuban people and their right to chart their own future free from foreign interference.

We call on CARICOM, the international community, and all people of conscience to reject this unjust policy and to stand in defense of Cuba’s sovereignty and dignity.

Cuba is not alone. Belize stands with Cuba—yesterday, today, and always.
