On the 14th of January outgoing US President Biden removed Cuba's designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism. This was part of a larger deal negotiated by the Vatican and one that was widely celebrated across the globe. 6 days later, the new President of the US, Trump has added the designation back on Cuba.
This is the second time Trump has sent US-Cuba relations back decades, the first being when he reversed Obama's previous decision to remove Cuba's designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism. In keeping with the trend of US brutality, Trump will inflict upon the Cuban people 4 more years of injustice and mass suffering.
With this designation comes sanctions such as:
1. A requirement that the US government opposes any potential loans to be given to Cuba by the World Bank or any other international financial institutions;
2. A ban on any US assistance to Cuba under the Food for Peace, Peace Corps and Export-Import Bank programs;
3. A ban on US persons from engaging in financial transactions with the Cuban government without US treasury permission.
These sanctions only serve to cripple the Cuban government’s ability to address the needs of its people and inhibit the consolidation of socialism in the Caribbean. As communists we must oppose any interference by US imperialism in Cuba and support the Cuban peoples march towards peace and socialism. We must oppose the Trump regime and its doctrine of hegemony and siege warfare. Now and until the US ends its interference in Cuba, until the embargo is lifted and until the Cuban people know peace, our slogan must be Hands Off Cuba!
