Statement of CSFI

Last month the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs Sr. Bruno Rodriguez, denounced the unjust decision by the United States of America to continue to keep Cuba on the List of Countries which Sponsors Terrorism, albeit clandestinely.

The U.S. has changed its tactic and although Cuba doesn’t appear outrightly on this list; U.S, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken openly  advised U.S. Congress that Cuba still remains as a threat to the U.S.A.

The illegal blockade of Cuba imposes a massive, flagrant and systemic violation of the Human Rights of the Cuban people. Ever since Trump imposed 243 extra sanctions days before he left the presidential office Biden followed suit and added a further 12.

All these additional punitive sanctions have now decimated the ordinary, albeit meagre, daily lives of the Cuban people, causing extreme shortages of just about every commodity in Cuba, especially where food, medicines oil/gas and much needed technological systems are concerned, and the entire economy has deteriorated which has reduced the people to exist on a hand to mouth basis, never knowing how or what they will be able to prepare for their next meal.

This is an unacceptable way for people to exist, especially when the world is aware of the humanitarian and medical assistance Cuba has provided in the cases of natural disasters, diseases such as the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, and lest we forget, the Cuban Medical Brigades were the first to respond to the appeal for medical assistance in Bergamo in Italy when COVID 19 first occurred in Europe, and they went on to assist 39 other countries across 4 continents.

Despite that gesture of humanity has been ignored by the U.S., if anything the U.S. government has opportunistically intensified these aggressive sanctions against the Cuban people making their lives a living hell.

Cuban Solidarity Forum Ireland (CSFI), cannot stand idly back and watch the genocidal blockade condemn this nation to such dire poverty at best, or to the brink of starvation at the worst case scenario.  We will be highlighting this unjust and the current dire dilemma of the Cuban nation, to our government in the coming weeks and request their intervention on the issue of the List of Sponsoring Terrorism and the illegal inhumane Blockade, asking them to remove themselves from any further interference in the lives of their sovereign, peaceful neighbours on the island of Cuba.

Compadres and Commadres, please be assured that you have our unrelenting support in helping your people. Ireland and Cuba have so much in common in our histories and we are always mindful of the ongoing atrocities which you are suffering.

Con un abrazo eterno,

Marie Barry
