STATEMENT BY THE CUBA-ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY

Kingstown, January 15, 2025

The Cuba-St. Vincent and the Grenadines Friendship Society has been calling repeatedly for the lifting of the criminal and illegal economic blockade against Cuba and the ending of the unjust designation of Cuba as a country that allegedly “sponsors Terrorism”.

Although the blockade remains in force and still harms the lives of the Cuban families, our organization welcomes with satisfaction the recent measures taken by the US Government, which include that of the removal of the island from the spurious List of States that supposedly Sponsor Terrorism, the elimination of the application of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act and the elimination of the list of restricted Cuban entities that designates a group of institutions with which American citizens and institutions are prohibited from carrying out financial transactions, with effect on third countries.

These are positive steps, which are consistent with the demands of hundreds of countries and organizations across the globe. However, they are not enough, given the fact that the economic, comercial and financial blockade is still in place.

The blockade continues to be the main obstacle for the full normalization of the bilateral relations between Cuba and the US.

We take this opportunity to remind that the blockade has consistently been rejected by the august body of the United Nations General Assembly, where 187 countries (with the exception of the USA and Israel) have been voting every year for lifting it and the US imperialism continues to pursue this bogus accusation to justify its weaponization of economic sanctions aimed at bringing Cuba to its knees and to force a regime change.

Despite the US sanctions, Cuba has been consistently delivering internationalist humanitarian assistance to many remote places of the world. St. Vincent and the Grenadines has over the years been one of the proud benefactors of Cuba’s generosity.

Instead of sending troops like some imperialist countries do, Cuba sends doctors and nurses to save lives. Cuba has always demonstrated its commitment to peace. For this it has earned the ire of US imperialism. There is nothing in Cuba’s foreign policy that remotely resembles the sponsorship of Terrorism. Cuba should have never been included in the list.

We must remain vigilant and ready to resist future attempts by the incoming Trump administration to overturn this decision. In this regard, we intend to rally and forge greater ties with other fraternal organizations and beyond in expressing firm solidarity with Cuba.

The Cuba-SVG Friendship Society stands firmly in solidarity with Cuba and expresses its unbroken commitment and support for the Cuban Revolution.
