Statement by the Cuba Support Group in Ireland.

We, Cuba Support Group Ireland, issue this statement ahead of the presentation of Cuba’s customary resolution at the UN General Assembly on October 27–28, 2026.

We note that the damages inflicted on Cuba by the U.S. blockade from March 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026, reached a record USD 8,083,300,000. We condemn the unprecedented tightening of the blockade and the multidimensional aggression aimed at suffocating and isolating Cuba, with devastating humanitarian consequences for the Cuban people.

We highlight Executive Order 14380 of January 29, 2026, which formalized an energy blockade under the absurd pretext that Cuba is an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to U.S. national security. It authorizes additional tariffs on imports from any country that directly or indirectly sells or supplies oil to Cuba. We regard this as collective punishment and a grave violation of international law, international human rights law, and international humanitarian law, including Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

We are appalled by the human cost: deaths caused by the lack of medicines Cuba once produced or subsidized; more than 100,000 surgeries canceled or unscheduled because hospitals cannot withstand blackouts or lack fuel for backup generators; over 118,000 cancer patients, including 1,200 children, unable to receive first-line treatments; and infant mortality rising to 9.3 per 1,000 live births, compared with 4–5 in previous years—1,780 newborn deaths that could have been prevented with adequate equipment and treatment.

We also condemn Executive Order 14404 of May 1, 2026, which expands extraterritorial “secondary” sanctions, allowing asset freezes and restrictions on foreign persons and entities in strategic sectors—energy, mining, finance, security, and defense—and on those providing financial, material, technological, or logistical support to the Cuban government. We reject the use of fear of losing access to the U.S. market and financial system to pressure third countries, companies, and banks. We recognize that Washington’s aim is to remove Cuba from the international economic and financial arena, trigger social, economic, and political chaos that could justify more aggressive action—including military options—and drive away commercial rivals in pursuit of total control of the island. We also oppose the Helms-Burton Act, especially Title III, and Cuba’s fraudulent designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism.

We stand in solidarity with Cuba’s right to self-determination and its willingness to engage in respectful dialogue without renouncing its principles. We reject the blockade, the energy embargo, and the policy of maximum pressure as a flagrant, massive, and systematic violation of the human rights of the Cuban people.

We demand that the Irish Government vote in favour of Cuba at the UN General Assembly today and end its ongoing complicity with illegal US sanctions against Cuba.
