The Communist Party of Ireland calls on the Irish government to support the upcoming vote in the UN General Assembly against the continuation of the illegal US blockade against Cuba. This blockade was imposed by the US to punish the Cuban people for choosing a socialist path and as a warning to all small states that dare to act independently of imperialism.
On January 21st 1919 Dail Éireann, in its Message to the Free Nations of the World, declared: “Ireland, resolutely and irrevocably determined at the dawn of the promised era of self determination and liberty that she will suffer foreign dominion no longer calls upon every free nation to uphold her national claim to complete independence as an Irish Republic against the arrogant pretensions of England.”
We now call on the Irish government to uphold the democratic, anti-colonial tradition which inspired that declaration and support the rights of another small island people in Cuba as they resist the arrogant pretensions of the US. The rights of small nations are as valid as those of larger ones. Cuba merely asks for the right to determine its own future, free from US intervention.
The blockade is causing hardship to the people of Cuba, it is unjust and illegal, and is just another case of a powerful state trying to control a smaller one. Irrespective of the blockade, Cuba will maintain on its chosen path and will not bend the knee to imperialism.
Article 29.1 of Bunreacht na hÉireann states that Ireland affirms its devotion to the ideal of peace and friendly cooperation amongst nations founded on international justice and morality. In line with the Constitutional imperative contained in Article 29.1, the Communist Party of Ireland calls on the government to support the vote against the blockade in the UN General Assembly.
