Cape Town, 27 January 2026.- The renowned and prestigious Cape Town-based newspaper Cape Times published the article “The United States «checkmate» against Cuba is doomed to fail” by Fatima Swartz, a founding and still active member of the solidarity movement with Cuba in South Africa.
The article discusses the recent threats by the United States against Cuba, following the imperialist aggression against Venezuela, and analyses why the Trump administration is turning its attention to the Caribbean island in this new context. It breaks down, point by point, the strategy of the “blond emperor” who seeks neither peace nor freedom for Cuba, but rather to turn it into a new Puerto Rico or even worse, under the old tactic of “divide and conquer”.
At the same time, Fatima outlines Cuba's dignified, firm and unyielding response to the threats, a principled stance inherited from centuries of struggle for independence and sovereignty, which has cost the Cuban people so much blood. “Defending the country's sovereignty is in the DNA of Cubans”, wrote Fatima, and she could not be more right.
Cuba belongs to Cubans, a compatriot committed to the independence of the land where he was born would add.
