Third Secretary participates in the conference offered by the Director General of the International Organization for Migration

Canberra, 28 March 2024. The Third Secretary of the Cuban Embassy in Australia, Ivianes Gonzalez, participated in the conference offered by the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Amy Pope, at the National Press Club of Australia.

Ms. Pope's speech addressed the common long-term challenges that developed nations, such as Australia, can address with thoughtful migration strategies to improve their ability to attract global talent, reduce pressure on asylum systems, prevent the exploitation of migrants, and remove incentives for smuggling and trafficking, while ensuring public confidence in their migration strategy. She also emphasized the impact of climate change on migration.

Amy Pope became Director General of IOM on 1 October 2023. She is the first woman to hold this position in IOM's 73-year history.

The conference was attended by academics, intellectuals, members of the accredited Diplomatic Corps, etc.
