Tribute to Chávez in Freedom Park, South Africa

Pretoria, March 4, 2026. Officials of the Cuban Embassy in South Africa participated in a tribute held in Freedom Park in honor of Venezuelan leader Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías on the thirteenth anniversary of his passing.

In this symbolic tribute, Cuban Ambassador Fakri Rodríguez Pinelo referred to Chávez as “Cuba's best friend,” as Fidel had described him, and noted that he will always be present in the hearts of all Cubans.

The event was attended by the general secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP) Solly Mapaila and the deputy secretary general of the African National Congress (ANC) Nomvula Mokonyane, who highlighted Chávez's leadership and his contribution to relations between Latin America and Africa.

At the foot of the exact spot where Chávez is located on the emblematic Wall of Names, a wreath was placed to remember him as the leader of the people that he always was.

The Cuban Embassy in South Africa accompanied their Venezuelan brothers and sisters in Pretoria in this tribute to the leader of Bolívar's homeland and eternal friend of Cuba.
