Nicosia, November 30, 2022. - The cinema of the city of Lympia hosted on the evening of November 29, 2022, the simple and emotional tribute to the Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro, on the sixth anniversary of his death, organized by the Cyprus-Cuba Friendship Association and the Embassy of the largest of the Antilles in the country.
The event, which was presided over by the Cuban Ambassador, Angel Gustavo Suarez Cordero and the President of the Friendship Association, Dr. Andreas Chrysanthoulos, was attended by several members of the Cuba solidarity organization in the city.
To begin the tribute, fragments of the documentary "El mérito de estar vivo" (The merit of being alive), by the production company Mundo Latino, were screened, which gathers the testimony of intellectuals, artists, students, workers, representatives of the Armed Forces and diplomats accredited in Cuba, about the legacy of the Commander in Chief and his battle of ideas for the solution of the problems of the Third World.
In his speech, the Cuban Ambassador evoked the revolutionary Fidel and leader of a people, but also an extraordinary human being. He explained how in spite of the difficult economic situation that persists in the Caribbean island, due in the first place to the effects of the blockade imposed against Cuba for more than 62 years, the Cuban people work, build and renew the Revolution every day, in defense of the legacy of the Commander-in-Chief. The Caribbean island diplomat thanked once again the solidarity of Cyprus with the Cuban people, especially the members of the Friendship Association, which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary of foundation.
In her words, on behalf of the Cyprus-Cuba Friendship Association, its secretary and also Head of International Relations of the Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus (AKEL), Vera Polycarpou recalled the depth of thought and analysis of Fidel, a follower of Marti's ideas and who was not only a leader for the Cuban people, but for all progressive movements in the world. He recalled that the former president of Cyprus and leader of AKEL, Dimitris Christofias recognized Fidel as "the greatest revolutionary of the second half of the 20th century".
Those present were also able to enjoy a photographic exhibition of various moments of Fidel's life, as well as an audio-visual material and the translation into Greek of the concept of Revolution, outlined by Fidel in his historic speech of May 1st, 2000 and which continues to be the guide of the Cuban people and progressive movements in the world.
To conclude the tribute to the Commander in Chief, those present enjoyed Marios Georgiou's interpretation of the songs "Como Kerem", a poem by Nazim Hikmet and with music by Manos Loizos; "The Ballad of the Uprising" with lyrics by Mihaelidis de Giorgio and music by Thanos Mikroutsikos and "Μicrocosmos", poem by Nazim Hikmet, set to music by Thanos Mikroutsikos (EmbaCubaCyprus).
