Dear friends,
We at IFCO/Pastors for Peace, are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the Honorable Ricardo
Alarcón de Quesada -- extraordinary statesman, revolutionary diplomat and unforgettable friend. His capacity to corral even the most hostile audiences, defend Cuba and engage reluctant allies will never be forgotten. His example is timeless.
From being a committed student leader in the revolutionary struggle to becoming a pioneer in the forging of a new kind of diplomacy, His Excellency was unrivaled. He served his people with great heart and indubitable passion.
To have been an established spokesman for Cuba during years where his country’s sovereignty was underfire and oftentimes ridiculed, he demonstrated profound dignity and commanded the respect that the heroic Cuban people truly deserve.
For all those who benefited from his advocacy and tremendous ability to negotiate, we know that we have lost a giant.
* Whether it was in the face of imperialist bullies at the United Nations defending Cuba;
* leading the initial people's power assemblies in Cuba;
* continuing in the legacy of Jose Martí in his dedication to resist the violation of Puerto Rico’s right to sovereignty;
* guiding peace talks in newly liberated countries in Southern Africa;
* lambasting the grave injustice related to the trial and sentencing of The Cuban Five Heroes;
* the tireless effort to return Elian Gonzalez home to Cuba.
Alarcon left his mark throughout his entire lifetime within the Cuban Revolution. His role as a great thinker and communicator who could explain things inside and outside of Cuba will be sorely missed.
We join with friends and colleagues from all over who knew and loved him in upholding his memory.
¡Distinguido Ricardo Alarcón de Quesada Presente!
