The tribute to Martí must be permanent

Pretoria, 28 January 2026 – The Cuban Embassy in South Africa paid a heartfelt tribute to José Martí, the most universal of all Cubans and the National Apostle, on the 173rd anniversary of his birth.

In her speech, the First Secretary in charge of consular affairs at the mission, Li Liu Jiménez Chang, referred to several of Martí's writings. Their relevance and importance are essential for defending the sovereignty and independence of Cuba today, especially in the current context marked by threats from the United States.

Second Secretary Bryan Betancourt Brito also commented on how Martí's legacy is constantly distorted by his enemies, which is why it is crucial to understand the true Martí and remember that he was a staunch anti-annexationist and anti-imperialist, regardless of what he wrote or said in his time. That is the Martí of all Cubans.

The Cuban diplomatic mission in Pretoria paid tribute to José Martí on his anniversary, reaffirming the commitment to working for the homeland and the Revolution.
