UK Communications Workers Union reaffirms solidarity with Cuba.

London, 24 April 2024- During a solidarity event with Cuba yesterday afternoon at the annual conference of the Communications Union (CWU), General Secretary Dave Ward called for the lifting of the US blockade of Cuba. ‘It is unacceptable that more than 80% of Cubans were born under the blockade,’ the British trade union leader emphasised while assuring that Cuba can always count on his support.

For his part, the director of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign (CSC), Rob Miller, explained the complex situation that the island has faced in recent years due to the tightening of the blockade, the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the inclusion on the US list of state sponsors of terrorism. In this context, Miller recalled the support of UK trade unions in raising more than £100,000 to purchase medical supplies for health institutions in Cuba during the most complex stage in the fight against the coronavirus. She also commented on the new solidarity project launched by the CSC under the title ‘Cuba Vive’ to raise funds and send a container of medicines, supplies and medical equipment.

The Cuban Ambassador, Ismara M. Vargas Walter, stated that the blockade remains the central element of the US policy towards Cuba. She underlined that the effects of this undeclared war on the economy, society, daily life, and the environment are still very serious.

He thanked all CWU members for supporting the international battle for the return of the Five Heroes, as well as for their contribution to the CSC.
