Pretoria, South Africa, 5 May 2026 – In an emotive ceremony held at the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in South Africa, the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) and the National Writers’ Association of South Africa (NWASA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This document marks a significant step forward in cultural and literary collaboration between the two nations, consolidating years of dialogue that began in 2023.
Molaodi wa Sekake, Acting President of NWASA, spoke, highlighting Cuba’s cultural legacy as a source of inspiration for South African writers. He emphasised its role as a symbol of the historic solidarity that has united both peoples at key moments in their shared histories.
The Cuban Ambassador outlined the main areas of collaboration set out in the MOU, such as the mutual translation of literary works and joint copyright protection. These initiatives aim to enrich the shared literary heritage and facilitate lasting creative exchanges.
The Director for Central America and the Caribbean at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) emphasised the unbreakable bond between Cuba and South Africa in the struggle against imperialism and neo-colonialism. He recalled the brotherhood forged in the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale and the strengthening of bilateral ties through this cultural alliance.
