Pretoria, 21 October 2026. —The University of Pretoria held an educational conference dedicated to analyzing the illegal application of unilateral sanctions and their consequences for peoples and sovereign states. The event brought together academics, students and diplomatic representatives to reflect on international law and the defense of multilateralism.
During the event, the political counsellor of the Cuban Embassy, Jesus Perz, denounced the immorality and injustice of the intensified economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government. It was explained that this unilateral policy affects the Cuban population, hinders national development and violates fundamental principles of international law, such as the self-determination of peoples and non-intervention in the internal affairs of States.
The participants agreed that unilateral sanctions do not constitute a legitimate means of exerting political pressure, but rather a form of coercion that punishes entire societies. They reaffirmed the need to strengthen multilateral mechanisms and to demand compliance with United Nations resolutions.
The Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in South Africa thanks the University of Pretoria for promoting this forum for dialogue and reiterates its commitment to truth, solidarity and the defense of peoples’ sovereignty.
