Urgent call to preserve peace

Call from the International Relations Committee of the National Assembly of the People's Power

The members of the International Relations Committee of the National Assembly of the People's Power of the Republic of Cuba call on the citizens of Latin America and the Caribbean, and of the United States, to act promptly and decisively to preserve our region as a Zone of Peace, as approved and proclaimed by the heads of state and government at the CELAC Summit held in Havana in January 2014.

We support the message of the President of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO), who denounces the disproportionate and aggressive deployment of naval and air assets, including a nuclear submarine, and the high number of US troops present in the Caribbean Sea.

We have the duty and the right to defend the peace and lives of our peoples. Dozens of people have already been killed by attacks carried out by US forces against vessels in the area, acts that qualify as extrajudicial executions and constitute a flagrant violation of international law.

Let us raise the voices of legislators from our region and around the world to stop the threats and criminal intentions of the current White House administration which, under the pretext of fighting drug trafficking, hides its true purpose of overthrowing the constitutional government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and seizing that country's valuable natural resources.

The militarization of the Caribbean in recent weeks constitutes an act of gross interference by the United States government. Its implementation expresses the philosophy of imperial domination based on the Monroe Doctrine, which dates back more than two centuries and is the basis for its interventionist efforts in the Americas.

The threats include attempts to cross the borders of sovereign states and use the territory of third countries. Washington's most recent act of aggression was the arbitrary and immoral decision to close Venezuela's airspace. In this regard, we support the timely condemnation by the Cuban Foreign Minister, who described the act as a very serious threat and an escalation of military aggression and psychological warfare against the Venezuelan people and government.

On behalf of our peoples, we are committed and have an obligation to act urgently and convey a message of peace to the American public in order to prevent the bloodshed of Latin American and Caribbean citizens, as well as citizens of the United States.

Let us work swiftly to multiply the calls for peaceful coexistence in all international parliamentary forums, in the media, and among all men and women of the world who understand the need to contribute with all possible efforts and actions to the preservation of peace, life, and security for our peoples.

Let us say No to war!
