US Actions against Cuba doomed to Fail, South African Leader

Pretoria, 1st July, 2019 (Prensa Latina).- The tightening of US actions against Cuba was considered as unjust, illegal and destined to fail since these ones will be unable to achieve the coveted change of rule Washington is seeking.

Member of the leadership of the Friends of Cuba Society (FOCUS) Lefika Chetty expressed that the Donald Trump administration took advantage from Venezuela’s issues to put more pressure on the island and cause great difficulties in its economy.

In an interview with Prensa Latina, Chetty stated that these actions, made more stringent through the application of the third chapter of the Helms-Burton Act, are illegal and interfere with the rights of other countries, although nobody is astounded by this because the United States intends to wipe out the Cuban Revolution.

In her opinion, this step of the Trump administration makes part of a right-wing policy against the minorities of that nation and the aggressions implemented against other countries of the South, in the midst of a position that ignores the fact that the world has changed and globalized.

The right-wing in the United States represented by the President wants to reverse the international order and is focusing on domestic issues for economic improvement and against migrations even when Europe and other regions of the world are hiring renowned professionals of nations in development.

These policies against people arriving in the United States from other parts of the world were labeled as apartheid practice by the South African leader.

Chetty recalled that FOCUS was founded by the legendary Nelson Mandela who was then President of that African country, with the aim of coordinating all the actions in solidarity with Cuba by organizations integrating the alliance of the government- Communist Party and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) – and other associations.

Since then, she stressed, FOCUS has kept its denounce of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the US against Cuba, its support for the claim of the illegally occupied territory by a US naval base in Guantánamo, and its recognition of Cuba’s support for the further development of African countries.

The young official of Education also referred particularly to the presence of Cubans in South Africa providing support in the sectors of health, education, construction and water resources, a reflection of the excellent political relations and of cooperation between the two countries.

She praised the achievements of Cuba in education and how one of her visits to Cuba matched the celebrations in tribute to National Hero José Martí.

Chetty said she was impressed by the tribute of Cuban children, who know at a very young age those who were those who fought for independence in their country and pay them tribute, which she considers relevant for knowing where they come from and the history of the nation.

Regarding the activities of FOCUS this year, Chetty said that two seminars were already celebrated by making good use of the detailed information on the situation in Cuba and its development plans provided by the visits of two high-level Cuban delegations.

For the rest of the year, in addition to two other similar meetings, FOCUS will organize, as every year, the celebrations for July 26, when in 1953 a group of young revolutionaries headed by Fidel Castro stormed the Moncada Barracks, at the beginning of which is considered the last stage of the liberation struggle of Cuba.

Also, as part of the coordination with other African countries of activities to support Cuba, FOCUS will participate in the International Conference of Solidarity with that country, which will take place in Nigeria from September 23 to 25.
