The U.S. is calling for one million signatures for Cuba.

The International Peoples' Assembly launched today a call for one million signatures to pressure the US government to review and remove Cuba from the arbitrary list of sponsors of terrorism.

The sovereignty and dignity of the Cuban people have been the object of attacks by the U.S. administration through "the cruel blockade for more than 60 years", stressed a publication on social networks by The People's Forum, a member organization of the Assembly based in New York.

The call emphasized that the unilateral siege -maintained by both Democratic and Republican administrations in the White House- was reinforced with the unjust inclusion of Cuba in the list drawn up by Washington.

A recent opinion published in the letters section of the U.S. newspaper The Boston Globe recalled that an April 6, 1960 memorandum by then Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs Lester Mallory revealed the essence of that policy toward the island: to provoke hunger, desperation and the overthrow of the government.

Over the decades, the United States has, in fact, increased its efforts to destroy the social and political project freely chosen by the people of the Caribbean nation.

The Torricelli and Helms-Burton laws that typify the blockade not only deny Cuba the ability to acquire necessary food and medicine, but also punish third countries for engaging in normal trade with the largest Antillean island, the text added.

The unjustified inclusion of Cuba on the unilateral U.S. list of "state sponsors of terrorism" further deprives it of the possibility of participating in international trade activities, it reiterated.

Every year, for more than three decades, the United Nations General Assembly has voted almost unanimously to condemn U.S. policy towards Cuba and demand an end to the blockade, the letter pointed out.

While this demonstrates how out of touch the United States is with the rest of the world community, it rejects even the most modest efforts to respect Cuban sovereignty, it concluded.
