Victory in Cuito Cuanavale was celebrated in South Africa

Pretoria, 23 March 2025 - The 37th anniversary of the victory in the battle of Cuito Cuanavale, in Angola, was celebrated this Sunday in the capital's Freedom Park, a historic site that captures an important part of South African history, including the struggle for the liberation of southern Africa, in which Cuba played a fundamental role.

In the presence of the South African Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton Mackenzie; the Angolan Minister of Culture and Tourism, Filipe Silva de Pina Zau; the South African Deputy Minister of Culture, authorities of Freedom Park Council, representatives of the provincial governments, members of the diplomatic corps, Cuban collaborators and residents, we celebrated the victory of the battle that changed the history of the region, forcing the apartheid regime to the negotiating table and facilitating, in one way or another, the independence of Namibia, South Africa and the stability of Angola´s.

The speakers agreed on the important role played by Cuban internationalists in this heroic deed, recalling the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, who, although he did not fall in Africa, is among the more than 2,000 Cubans inscribed on the Wall of Names, having been essential in the struggle for freedom in the region.

In front of the wall, wreaths were laid as an eternal tribute to those who gave their lives for the independence and sovereignty we enjoy today.

The Cuban Ambassador to South Africa, Esther Armenteros, highlighted how one of the most beautiful pages in the history of international solidarity was written in that small town of Cuando Cubango, where Cubans, Angolans, South Africans and Namibians gave their blood, sweat and lives together for the freedom of the Mother Continent.
