Roseau, Dominica - June 27, 2024 - In a gesture of strengthening cultural and friendship ties, the Cuban Ambassador to Dominica, Miguel Fraga, paid an official visit to the Kalinago territory. Authorities and members of this community, one of the last indigenous populations in the Caribbean with about 3000 people, received the ambassador with great hospitality and pride.
During his visit, the Cuban diplomat was received and accompanied by the Honorable Cozier Frederick, Minister of Environment, Rural Modernization, Kalinago Indigenous People Enhancement and Voter Empowerment, as well as by Kalinago Chief Lorenzo Sanford.
The Kalinago, known for their rich history and deep connection to the Caribbean islands, are considered custodians of ancestral traditions dating back several centuries. This visit underscores the importance of preserving these traditions and highlights Cuba's commitment to supporting indigenous communities in the region.
During the visit, Ambassador Fraga had the opportunity to visit sites of interest within the community and was able to appreciate some of the cultural richness of the Kalinago as well as learn more about their history.
"It is an honor to be here and to experience first-hand the cultural richness of the Kalinago. This visit allows us to strengthen ties and explore ways of collaboration in areas such as health, education and sustainable development. I leave grateful for the hospitality received", stated Ambassador Fraga.
In addition, they discussed possible collaborative projects that could benefit the Kalinago community, including educational exchanges and health care programs.
The visit of the Cuban ambassador to the Kalinago territory represents a significant step in the bilateral relations between Cuba and Dominica, and reinforces the commitment of both countries to the preservation and promotion of their cultural heritages.
The current president of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Sylvanie Burton, is of Kalinago origin and, upon her election in 2023, became the first woman and the first person of indigenous origin to hold that position in Dominica's history.
