Warm welcome to new Cuban healthcare cooperant in Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Basseterre, August 27, 2025 – Health authorities of this Federation, led by Permanent Secretary Curtis A. Martin, offered a warm welcome to Dr. Yaimé Carbonell Vilet, Specialist in Angiology and Vascular Surgery, who joins the Cuban Medical Brigade, which has worked in Saint Kitts and Nevis for nearly three decades.

The reception took place at the Joseph Nathaniel France General Hospital, also attended by Ambassador David Rivero Pérez and Dr. Odalis Abreu Guirado, Chief of the Medical Brigade, representing the Cuban side. The hosts side also, was Dr. Merisa Grant-Tate, Acting Chief of the Health Services Medical Staff.

In his remarks, Permanent Secretary Martin expressed his gratitude to Cuba for its historic support of his country in providing assistance and training in the health sector. In this regard, the Ambassador expressed, on behalf of his people and government, the willingness to continue supporting brothers and sisters in the Caribbean, and Saint Kitts and Nevis in particular, despite external pressures and the cruel impact of the U.S. blockade, which severely impacts all sectors of Cuban society.

Dr. Grant, an oncologist who graduated in Cuba, conveyed the affection, admiration, and gratitude she feels for the country, for the historic humanitarian and work it has carried out throughout the world for so many years. She also joined in the warm words of welcome expressed to Dr. Carbonel Vilet by all those present.

At the close of the meeting, a tour of all areas of the hospital was given, and the new Cuban cooperant was introduced to each.
