Taking a firm stance in favor of the normalization of relations between the United States and Cuba, Ypsilanti City Council, in Michigan, recently approved a resolution urging the federal government to remove Cuba from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism and end the economic blockade that has been in place for more than six decades.
The resolution recalls that the President of the United States has the executive authority to remove Cuba from this list and advocates for the normalization of relations between the two countries.
The approved text states that the blockade imposed by the U.S. has restricted trade, finance, and cooperation with Cuba, particularly affecting the Cuban people. It specifically notes that this policy "has created shortages of food, medicine, and vital medical supplies." Furthermore, it rejects the 243 sanctions imposed by the Trump administration during its first term, including restrictions on remittances sent by Cuban-Americans to their families on the island.
The resolution also cites a letter signed by 117 members of Congress in 2021, which states that improving relations with Cuba benefits both the interests of the United States and the Cuban people.
The document concludes with a call to their federal representatives to promote legislation that eliminates the sanctions imposed and allows for a relationship free of restrictions between the two peoples.
