71 UNGA: Cuba at the First Committee Thematic Debate on “Outer Space”.

Mr. Chairman,

The threat of an arms race in outer space and its militarization increases with the continuing development and improvement of space weapons, the presence of war materials in space such as military satellites, and the absence of a legally binding framework preventing weapons from been deployed in outer space.

Cuba supports the policy of no-first placement of any kinds of weapons in outer space and is fully committed to the prevention of the arms race in outer space.

71 UNGA: Cuba at the First Committee Thematic Debate on item: “Other weapons of mass destruction”.

Mr. Chairman,

Cuba does not possess or intend to possess any kind of weapons of mass destruction and strongly supports their total and full prohibition and elimination.

The only absolute guarantee to prevent the acquisition and use of weapons of mass destruction, even by terrorists, is the total and immediate elimination and prohibition of these weapons in a transparent, verifiable and irreversible manner.

71 UNGA: Cuba at the First Committee Thematic Debate on Nuclear Weapons.

Mr. Chairman,

We fully support the statement delivered by Indonesia on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement.

The international community cannot remain silent in the face of the major threat posed by nuclear weapons for the survival of humankind. Intentional or not, the detonation of a small fraction of these weapons would have devastating consequences for our planet.

The existence of over 15,000 nuclear weapons, 4,000 of them ready to be deployed, cannot be justified and is unacceptable.
