END THE 62-YEAR OLD US BLOCKADE OF CUBA!
On 2nd and 3rd of November, the UN General Assembly will discussthe resolution tabled by Cuba condemning the criminal US blockade of Cuba and the Cuban people. In view of this debate, the Cyprus-Cuba Friendship Association denounces in the strongest possible terms this ongoing criminal policy of the US and demands its immediate termination. At the same time, we call on the Cypriot government to stand by its position of principle and support the resolution.
For 62 years, Cuba has been facing the inhumane US economic, commercial and financial blockade, which constitutes a flagrant violation of the human rights of all Cubans. The Resolution notes that "it may be characterised as an act of genocide under the 1948 Convention on the Prevention of the Crime of Genocide," at a cost of $150 billion 410.8 million, which if calculated at today's dollar/gold exchange rate is $1 trillion, $326 billion 432 million.
Thirteen consecutive US governments have imposed the blockade trying to exploit of the negative situation they themselves are causing seeking to overthrow the Cuban Revolution. The blatant interferences in the internal affairs of Cuba, the slanderous propaganda and distortions of the real situation in Cuba which aim to create instability are all daily threats that the Cuban people and government have to confront.
Even during the pandemic crisis, instead of helping, the US tightened the vice around Cuba's neck even more, with the 243 new measures imposed by the Trump administration and which the Biden administration continues to implement despite promises to end them. Characteristic of the inhumane consequences of the US blockade is the fact that although during the pandemic Cuban scientists developed five vaccines, there were no syringes needed to administer them.
The people of Cyprus, themselves victims of foreign interventions, know the importance of the struggle for independence and sovereignty and, at the same time, the power of solidarity with other peoples. Since 1960, the Cuban people have stood by Cyprus and our struggle to end the occupation, to reunite our homeland and people in every international forum. We reiterate our full solidarity with the government and people of Cuba who are struggling for dignity and national sovereignty. We support their inalienable right to choose their own leadership and path of socio- economic development of their country.
