Screenings

Thursday 4th Cuban movie

Ciudad en rojo – City in red (2009) directed by Rebeca Chávez

Synopsis:

It reflects on violence in those who have no vocation for it but are pushed into it. When violence is imposed to restore peace, sometimes there is no choice but to respond violently, an attitude that could be considered legitimate and defensive but that leaves marks on human beings. This reflection does not occur in an abstract way but it is evidenced in the characters and actions of the novel Bertillon 166 and in the history of Santiago de Cuba.

Sunday 7th Brazilian movie

O auto da Compadecida – A dog´s will (2020) directed by Guel Arraes

Synopsis:

The comedy A Dog’s Will, originally titled Auto da Compadecida (The Mystery Play of the Merciful One), is considered a Brazilian classic. It showcases the adventures of friends João Grilo, a penniless trickster, and Chicó, the most cowardly of men. In their struggle for daily bread in the Northeast of Brazil, they try to make ends meet by using their wits, not stopping short of swindling. The two get involved in a few imbroglios and a fair share of misadventures. Their ultimate destiny, however, lies outside the reach of the desires and whims of earthly powers.

Friday 12th Spanish movie

Madre – Mother (2019) directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen

Synopsis:

In this drama, a six-year-old boy, Ivan, disappears on a beach in France. Ten years later Elena, his mother, lives on the same beach working as a restaurant manager and meets a teen who reminds her of Ivan. Both will embark on a relationship which will lead this mother to finally say goodbye to her son.

-Sunday 14th Portuguese movie

A Mãe é que Sabe Mother Knows Best (2016) directed by Nuno Rocha

Synopsis:

Ana Luísa's family meet at home to celebrate her father's birthday. As the guests sit around the table, they share memories with a common denominator: the late Josefa, Ana Luisa's mother. When listening to the stories, Ana Luísa realizes the impact that the deceased mother had on her life choices. At the same time, an astrophysical event of unknown origin causes the change of space-time, allowing some people, all over the world, to access parallel universes. Ana Luisa is one of them, and will thus have the opportunity to change the past.

Screenings will be held at the Cultural Centre of the European University of Nicosia at 8:30pm.

All movies will be in their original language with English or Greek subtitles. Free admission.
