Successful webinar between Cyprus and Cuba on biotechnology.
In the afternoon of 13 June, a virtual workshop was held on topics related to biotechnology in Cuba and its results. The videoconference was held under the auspices of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Chamber of Commerce of Cuba.
During the opening greeting, the President of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Christodoulos E. Angastiniotis stressed the importance of further strengthening the economic and trade relations between the two countries through the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding. Mr. Agkastiniotis pointed out the common challenges of the two countries in the current international context.
The Vice-President of the Cuban Chamber of Commerce, Mrs. Tania Aguilar greeted those present, while signifying the importance of holding seminars of this type to establish links between researchers, universities and the biopharmaceutical industry.
The Cuban Ambassador to Cyprus, Mr. Angel Gustavo Suárez Cordero, highlighted the results of the Cuban biopharmaceutical industry and particularly the five vaccines created during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Cuban diplomat thanked the cooperation of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Cuba and urged to continue to strengthen ties in the economic and commercial area.
Mr. Marios Tannousis, President of Cyprus Invest made a brief presentation on the joint investment opportunities in biotechnological matters, as well as the opportunities that are presented and the role of Cyprus in the Mediterranean area and as a member of the European Union.
Meanwhile, Dr. David Curbelo, Commercial and Business Director of the Cuban company BioCubaFarma, gave a presentation on the business models, strategy, opportunities and results of the Caribbean island's biopharmaceutical industry in recent years.
Participating in the conference from the Cypriot side: Alexia Nicolaidou from C.A.PAPAELLINAS, Lefteris Zacharia, Yiannis Sarigiannis, Christos Petrou from the University of Nicosia, Chrysafis Andreou from the University of Cyprus, Theodora Iatsinska from M. E.K.P. Energy Ltd and Menicos Petrou from Mundipharma Pharmaceuticals Ltd. On the Cuban side were specialists from Biocubafarma, the Chamber of Commerce and the Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (EmbaCuba Cyprus).
