Haragvi: Unity and Solidarity: essentials words for the G77 + China Summit to be held in Cuba
On September 15 and 16, 2023, a Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Group of 77 plus China, the largest and most diverse group of geopolitical concertation among countries in the multilateral arena, will be held in Havana. The central theme will be the role of science, technology and innovation in today's development challenges.
Nearly one hundred world leaders are expected to attend this important event, which seeks to find areas of consensus and common agendas on social, economic, technological and other issues. The Group of 77, created in 1964 within the Non-Aligned Movement, aims to create the means for the countries of the South to articulate their economic interests and strengthen joint negotiating capacity within the UN. Today, it is composed of 134 developing countries, representing 2/3 of the UN membership and about 80% of the world's population. In addition, China, one of the world's leading economies, has been participating and collaborating with the UN since 1992.
Cuba, which is chairing the group for the first time, has said that among its priorities are preserving and consolidating the group's unity, supporting the multilateral trading system and defending universal access to quality education and health. All this, while pursuing efforts to fulfill the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development.
The G77 + China Summit will be an opportunity to demonstrate Cuba's leadership and contribution to this movement over the years. Cuban diplomacy has been able to comply with the significant vote of confidence of small, medium and large countries that have bet on its professionalism, honesty and transparency to lead the group during this year, marked by uncertainty and the transition to a new international order.
The Summit's final declaration will reflect the challenges and demands of developing countries in the face of an unjust international economic order, which has been affected by covid-19, unilateral coercive measures, economic and financial crises, growing emigration, inflation, the increase in extreme poverty, the adverse effects of climate change and digital divides.
The Summit will also reaffirm the importance of creating conditions for accessing and utilizing technology and innovation, as well as charting paths for political agreement on South-South cooperation, North-South cooperation or related formulas.
The G77 + China Summit in Cuba will be a historic milestone for the strengthening of solidarity and cooperation among the countries of the South.
The great event in Havana will pave the way for the Presidency of Uganda, a sister country with which Cuba has worked in very close coordination with a view to the transfer of the Presidency of the G-77 and China and the success of the successive and very significant Summits of the Non-Aligned Movement and the G-77 + China.
