Cubans, Latin Americans and Cypriots pay tribute to José Martí in Nicosia on the 171st anniversary of his birth.

On the morning of 27 January 2024, several Cuban residents, Latin American friends and Cypriots gathered at the José Martí Monument on Stasinou Avenue in Nicosia to pay homage to Cuba's National Hero on the 171st anniversary of his birth.

Cyprus Cuba and the Cuban Embassy, the Ambassador of the Caribbean island, Angel Gustavo Suárez Cordero highlighted the historical transcendence and the importance of the thought of the most universal of Cubans. The diplomat highlighted how José Martí's thought of unity remains in the ideology of a people that for 65 years has maintained his thought as a guide for the Revolution and confronting the genocidal and inhuman blockade imposed more than 60 years ago by the USA. At the same time, he emphasised the Marti's idea of justice, for this reason he raised his voice and that of a whole people against the genocide taking place against the Palestinian people. 

Dr. Andreas Chrysanthou, President of the Association, recalled the life and work of the Cuban Apostle and recognised how the Cuban Revolution has its essence in Martí. He called for the USA to lift the financial, economic and commercial blockade against Cuba and called for an end to the massacre taking place against the people of Palestine. 

For his part, comrade Neoklis Sylikiotis, member of the Central Committee of the Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus - AKEL, emphasised the figure of José Martí and his ideology that prevails in the Cuban Revolution 65 years after the triumph of January 1959. He also expressed his support to the Cuban people in their struggle.

against the blockade and the commitment that the people and the AKEL party will always accompany them, while expressing their repudiation of the genocide in Palestine. 

The friends of the group "Chamomile Sounds", led by the Chilean Luis Eduardo Mena, performed several songs to liven up the act of homage to Martí, in particular "Todos por la paz" (All for peace) in support of the Palestinian cause. 

The ceremony ended, as usual, with the placing of white flowers at the monument to the most universal of Cubans. Present at the simple tribute were the Ambassador of Palestine to Cyprus, Abdalla Attari; the Cypriot MEP, Giorgios Giorgiou; MPs Marina Nikolau and Giorgos Koukoumas; the General Secretary of the Cyprus Federation of Workers (PEO), Sotiroulla Charalambous, the President of the International Union of Construction Workers, Michalis Papanikolaus; the General Secretary of the Left Women's Movement of Cyprus (POGO), Skevi Koukoumas; the General Secretary of the Democratic Youth Organisation (EDON), Seviros Koulas and representatives of the Cyprus Peace Council of Cyprus, the Green Party - Citizens Cooperation, Cypriot friends, Latin Americans and Cuban residents (EmbaCuba Cyprus ).
