Cuba commemorates the 171st anniversary of José Martí´s birth

Pretoria, 28 January 2024 - Cuba celebrates this Sunday a special day of tribute to José Martí (1853-1895), the National Hero, on the occasion of the 171st anniversary of his birth. At the Cuban embassy in South Africa, the human Martí, of flesh and blood, who lived for and to the homeland, was remembered.

His life in New York, his hobbies and likes, his pain as a human being that suffered from torture, his deep love for Cuba, his art as a polyglot, all the little details that make one feel closer to the great hero were remembered.

Dr Xiomara Pedroso, a Cuban resident in South Africa, described Martí as "omnipresent and perpetual to light up everything". "The legacy of his work is the vital compass that does not let us get lost wherever we are. By retracing his paths we learn from within to love Cuba." Her words were reflected in an article published by Cubadebate, in which she expressed the feelings of many Cubans, both inside and abroad the island.

Martí's high culture and special sensitivity allowed him to leave at 42 years of age a vast written work, of singular style and beauty, which constitutes an essential reference for all generations of Cubans.
