London, 5 April 2024- Two representatives of the National Union of Education, Science and Sport Workers (SNTECD) of Cuba are in the United Kingdom to participate in solidarity activities with Cuba in the framework of the National Conference of the British National Education Union (NEU), which is taking place in the English city of Bournemouth from 3 to 6 April.
Yesterday afternoon, Miroslava Pozo Pinares, member of the SNTECD national secretariat, and Mariela Camacho Caballero, general secretary of the SNTECD provincial committee in Havana, spoke on the panel organised by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign at the NEU conference venue under the title "Cuba Vive - End the blockade on health and education". Addressing the audience, both comrades highlighted the spirit of resistance of the Cuban people in the face of the inhumane effects of the US blockade, while thanking the traditional solidarity of the members of the NEU.
The fringe meeting was chaired by Cuba Solidarity Campaign chair Kevin Courtney, who served as NEU joint General Secretary until the middle of last year, and included important contributions from NEU president Emma Rose, as well as teachers who led the union's delegation to Cuba in October 2023.
As part of their programme in the UK, Pozo Pinares and Camacho Caballero were also received by the Cuban ambassador, Ismara M. Vargas Walter.
In 2022, the National Education Union and the Cuba Solidarity Campaign launched the "Viva la Educación" appeal, which made it possible to raise more than 100,000 pounds sterling and send two containers of supplies and materials to schools on the Caribbean island in mid-2023.
