Roseau, Dominica - June 10, 2024- This morning, Lorenzo Sanford, Chief of the Kalinago, one of the last indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, was received by Ambassador Miguel Fraga at the diplomatic representation of Cuba in the Commonwealth of Dominica.
During the meeting, Ambassador Fraga expressed his respect and admiration for the cultural heritage and history of the Kalinago and stressed the importance of preserving their traditions. "It is an honor to welcome Kalinago Chief Lorenzo Sanford to our Embassy. This meeting is an opportunity to strengthen our cultural ties and work together for an inclusive and diverse future,” the Cuban diplomat stated.
Sanford thanked for the warm reception and stressed the importance of collaboration to support indigenous communities. He highlighted and thanked that members of his community have studied in Cuba as part of the scholarships that the Greater Antilles has offered Dominica over the years.
The exchange allowed for a preliminary evaluation of possible collaboration projects in health and education. The Cuban Ambassador will soon visit the territory of the Kalinago, a community in the northwest of the country where about 3,000 people live.
The current president of the country, Sylvanie Burton, is of Kalinago origin and, when elected in 2023, became the first woman and the first person of indigenous origin to occupy that position in the history of Dominica.
