Between October 20 and 24, officials of the Cuban Embassy in Washington, DC, Alejandro García del Toro, Deputy Chief of Mission; Nora Alberteris Monterrey, Consul General, Thalia Gonzalez Gomez, and Yeisel Lorenzo Guerra, visited the state of Kentucky, specifically the cities of Louisville and Frankfort. The meetings held covered diverse sectors of U.S. society such as universities, businesses, an African American community center, travel agencies, and local politicians. By the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the objective of the trip focused on expanding ties in the U.S. region to promote and defend a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries.
Kicking off the program was a presentation at the Kentucky/Southern Indiana World Affairs Council on current bilateral ties, the impact of U.S. sanctions on the living standards of Cubans, and also the country's special circumstances amid the energy emergency. Businessmen, academics, retirees, and congressional aides interested in having information on these issues participated in the meeting.
Other important meetings took place with the directors of Kentucky State University, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, among others.
This state of the American Union has been the settlement of many Cuban nationals in recent years. Hence, the approach of our diplomatic mission was not only limited to connecting with U.S. colleagues from various sectors but also with travel agencies working with the Consulate and offering regular services to the Cuban community settled there. The visit was an opportunity to reconnect with a U.S. region to develop profitable ties with our country.
