Kingstown, 29 January 2025. Members of the Cuban community in SVG; members of the SVG-Cuba Friendship Society and the embassies of Venezuela and Cuba in this Caribbean nation, remembered our country’s National Hero, José Martí, on the 172nd anniversary of his birth.
Martí’s thought and work were evoked through the Cuban film "Cuba Libre", of recently deceased director Jorge Luis Sánchez, which recreates the endings of the War of 95, the defeat of the Spanish empire at the hands of the “mambises” and the American intervention in the war, perhaps one of the most frustrating moments in the history of the Cuban nation.
Although the film is not directly linked to the life of “El Apóstol”, it does relate to his figure, since it was precisely Martí who warned of the expansionist and imperialist aspirations of the United States and the danger that this represented for the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, which unfortunately happened in Cuba, when the US military snatched away the aspirations for national independence upon entering the war.
Those present at the activity reflected on the humanist, revolutionary and universal dimensions of Martí, who dedicated his life and work to the Cuban nation and its noble people, which served as a guide for subsequent generations, led by the Commander-in-Chief, Fidel Castro Ruz, who broke their chains and patented the longed independence (Cuban Embassy in St. Vincent and the Grenadines/Cubaminrex)
