London February 18, 2025. - As part of its agenda in the United Kingdom, the delegation of the Fidel Castro Ruz Center visited the Karl Marx Memorial in London, a center dedicated to the preservation of Marxist thought and the study of socialism.
During the tour, the Cuban academics learned about its valuable documentary collection, which includes Cuban archives of Prensa Latina and a book dedicated by Fidel Castro. The memorial, with 90 years of history, has collected materials on socialism and revolutionary thought, consolidating itself as the only educational center on Marx that operates without government funding, thanks to the support of trade unions and more than 800 members.
As part of its agenda in the United Kingdom, the Fidel Castro Ruz Center delegation visited the Karl Marx Memorial in London, an emblematic space dedicated to the preservation of the Marxist legacy. There, the Cuban researchers learned first-hand about the invaluable collection of documents, photographs and historical materials stored in this center, including archives of the Prensa Latina news agency and a book dedicated by Comandante Fidel Castro.
One of the most moving moments of the visit was the encounter with the homage paid to the historical leader Fidel Castro Ruz in the room where classes and seminars are given and where the workers who attend the center consult the materials.
The building, built in 1738, has a profound historical value. In the 1860s, it hosted meetings of the International, where it is presumed that Karl Marx coincided with trade unions and other key figures of socialist thought. Later, in the 1880s, it housed a social democratic printing press, considered the root of the British Communist Party.
Currently, the memorial offers a reading room, event programs and online classes, in addition to collaborating with universities and research centers. Its collection includes some volumes of Fidel Castro's work, an indispensable reference for the study of revolutionary thought.
The Cuban visitors highlighted the importance of the documentation on the 50th anniversary of Marx's death and the burning of books by German fascism in 1933, events that motivated the British trade unionists to preserve his memory in this place.
This exchange reaffirms the commitment of both institutions to research, historical memory and the strengthening of academic ties between Cuba and the United Kingdom.
