Nicosia, Cyprus - The play ‘El Che’ premiered to a full house on Saturday, 29 March 2025 at the Satyric Theatre in Nicosia as part of the celebrations for the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Cuba and Cyprus.
The event, which was attended by a full house, was opened by the Cuban Ambassador, who stressed the historical and cultural importance of the occasion: ‘Tonight we gather in a special moment of celebration, which intertwines history, culture and diplomacy. The presentation of ‘El Che’ is not simply a theatrical performance but a bridge connecting the souls of Cuba and Cyprus, a living testimony of 65 years of diplomatic relations and mutual understanding’.
In his opening speech, the Cuban ambassador also underlined the shared values between the two nations: ‘Sixty-five years ago, our countries embarked on a path of friendship that has transcended borders, ideologies, and geographical distances. Che embodied values that resonate deeply both in Cuban history and in the Cypriot spirit: the struggle for independence, dignity, and the right of peoples to build their own destiny. His legacy transcends the borders of Latin America and becomes a message of hope for all nations that aspire to justice and freedom’.
Among the distinguished attendees were the ambassadors of Slovakia, Italy, Spain, Serbia, and Switzerland, who were received by the Cuban ambassador. During the event, the diplomat also had the opportunity to exchange views with George Perdikis, president of the Ecologist Movement - Citizen Cooperation of Cyprus, both agreeing that Che's ideas are still relevant in today's world.
Vera Policarpou, Secretary for International Relations and European Affairs of the Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus and Secretary of the Cyprus-Cuba Friendship Association, was also present at the event.
The performance of Vasilis Kyriakou, who played the lead role, was able to transport all those present to transcendental moments in the life of Ernesto Che Guevara in a staging directed by Giannis Stamatiou, with photography and poster design by Athanasópoulos Petros. This cultural event represents a significant milestone in the celebrations of the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Cyprus and Cuba, reinforcing the ties of friendship and cooperation that have characterized the shared history of both nations (EmbaCuba Cyprus).
