Cuban medicine always on the side of those who need it most

Pretoria, 28 July 2025. Dr Rusbel Medina, a member of the Cuban medical brigade in South Africa for almost 30 years, was recently interviewed by South African journalist S'thembiso Msomi, who was interested in learning about the work carried out by Cuban doctors in this country.

‘If you were born in Cuba, you grew up hearing about this doctor (referring to Che), he was an example of what we wanted to be. From a very early age, we knew who he was and what he meant to Cuba. After becoming a doctor, you identify with someone like that, someone who sacrificed his personal life,’ said Dr Rusbel about the inspiration that led him to become a doctor.
