Cuban Ambassador meet with Cyprus Shipping Chamber Leadership to strengthen Maritime Cooperation

NICOSIA, CYPRUS – His Excellency Mr. Ángel Gustavo Suárez Cordero, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Cyprus, held a productive meeting on the morning of 10 September with Mr. Alexandros Josephides, Secretary General  of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, to discuss opportunities for improving maritime cooperation between Cuba and Cyprus.

The meeting took place at the Cyprus Shipping Chamber's premises in Limassol and focused on the upcoming ‘Maritime Cyprus 2025’ conference, scheduled for 6-8 October 2025 in Limassol, on opportunities for cooperation and on the impact of the blockade imposed on Cuba for more than 60 years in this area, which is so important for the economy.

During the meeting, the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, on behalf of the Deputy Minister of Shipping, extended a courtesy invitation to the Cuban Ambassador to participate in the ‘Maritime Cyprus 2025’ conference, which will bring together the global maritime community under the slogan "Unlocking the future... of maritime transport" to explore the main advances and challenges facing the industry.

Ambassador Suárez Cordero expressed his gratitude for Cyprus' gesture and highlighted the importance of resuming cooperation ties in the sector, particularly with the Cuban company Selecmar

For his part, the Cuban Ambassador informed the Secretary General of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber about the effects of the blockade, in particular the impossibility of having a regular supply due to the sanctions imposed on shipping companies that call at Cuban ports, thus affecting logistics and making all economic processes in the country more expensive.

The ‘Maritime Cyprus 2025’ conference is expected to attract international maritime professionals, industry leaders and government officials from around the world. The three-day event will feature discussions on the latest trends, innovations and challenges facing the global shipping industry.

The meeting underscores both countries' commitment to expanding bilateral relations and creating new opportunities for economic cooperation in the maritime sector (EmbaCuba Cyprus).
