Nicosia, Cyprus, November 30, 2025. The Cuban Ambassador to Cyprus, Rubén Pino Martínez, attended on Friday, November 28, 2025, the inauguration of the installation “Water Movement Nicosia,” an interactive and thought-provoking work by the artist Maurice Cazzolli, created to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of the Austrian Embassy in this capital.
Temporarily scheduled in the Municipal Plaza Plateia Dimarchias in Nicosia, Cazzolli's work transforms the aforementioned urban municipal setting into a temporary space of shared water. Through 3D sensors, sound, and projections, the installation invites passersby to interact with digital waves, while drawing attention to the contrasting realities of water in Cyprus and Austria, highlighting the urgent issues caused by its scarcity, collective presence, and the invisible flows that connect people and places around the world.
The work is part of a specific initiative of the “Work in Progress (WIP), Art and Technology Biennial of the Center of Excellence,” which connects artists, scientists, and technologists through research, creation, and collaboration on diverse projects. The Biennale has become a vital meeting point for art, science, and technology, attracting thousands of visitors and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations.
A proposal that involved multiple stakeholders, with the support of the Department of Contemporary Culture of the Deputy Ministry of Culture of Cyprus, the Mayor of Nicosia, Charalambos Prountzos, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, and the Austrian Ambassador in Nicosia, Dr. Susanne Bachfischer. A thoughtful, intelligent, and timely look at issues affecting humanity, presented in celebration of a happy anniversary of Austria in Cyprus.
