Nicosia, Cyprus, 9 February 2026. The Cypriot newspaper Haravgi published in its summary editions a brief review of the act carried out in the sculptural group dedicated to José Martí in this capital, a tribute convened on the occasion of the 173rd anniversary of the birth of the National Hero of Cuba.
The review reproduces some references to the struggles for national independence, dignity and international justice, ideas that focused the event in honor of the apostle and poet of Cuba, José Martí, a call that had as its main speaker Hari Policarpou, member of the Political Bureau of the Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus (AKEL).
173 years after his birth in 1853, “Homage to Martí”—as the publication was presented— reviews the words of Policarpou, who in his speech emphasized that “José Martí constitutes a symbol of the anti-colonial struggle and of the universal fight of peoples against colonialism, slavery, and social injustice,” while also highlighting that “his work and actions inspired the struggle for national liberation, in which he himself actively participated, giving his life in 1895 in the Battle of Dos Ríos.”
As he pointed out, “José Martí endures, at the same time, as a permanent reference for the Cuban people in the face of foreign interventions, economic independence, and the financial blockade imposed by the United States.” A speech that “made special reference to the situation in Latin America, denouncing the interventions of the United States in other sovereign states, such as Venezuela.”
