Washington, April 2. — A group of 50 U.S. lawmakers, including senators and representatives, sent a letter this Wednesday to President Donald Trump expressing their opposition to the embargo his administration maintains against Cuba and calling for a change in policy toward the island.
The letter is led by Gregory Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Senator Tim Kaine, Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere. In the document, the legislators emphasize the need to review current measures, which they describe as harmful and counterproductive.
According to the text, existing policies have had a severe impact on the Cuban people, affecting their access to essential resources and hindering the country’s economic development. The signatories argue that these measures have failed to achieve the objectives set by the United States after more than six decades of implementation.
In this regard, the lawmakers call on the Trump administration to adopt a new approach that would improve bilateral relations and promote more humane conditions for the Cuban population.
