Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran condemning illegal interventions against Cuba

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the continued interference by the US ruling elite in Cuba’s internal affairs, the illegal sanctions, provocative actions, political pressure, and military threats against the country.

The US economic and trade sanctions against Cuba, imposed and maintained since 1960 following the Cuban Revolution, constitute a violation of Cuba’s national sovereignty and the fundamental principles of the Charter of the United Nations, particularly the principle of respect for the right of peoples to self-determination. These sanctions have resulted in flagrant violations of the Cuban people’s human rights and widespread economic damage to the country.

The illegal and inhumane sanctions imposed by the United States against Cuba over the past 66 years—considered the longest-running sanctions ever imposed on a country—constitute a crime against humanity due to their far-reaching effects and consequences on the human rights of the Cuban people. The US ruling elite must be held accountable for these crimes. The actions of the US ruling elite in recent months, intensifying sanctions and imposing a maritime blockade against Cuba, along with provocative and unfounded accusations against the country, carried out with the clear objective of intimidating and extorting the Cuban government, constitute yet another example of the US's violation of international law and intimidating behavior, which must be condemned by all governments and by the United Nations.

Undoubtedly, the will of peoples to preserve their independence and national dignity cannot be broken through sanctions and threats. The Islamic Republic of Iran, while expressing its full solidarity with the government and people of Cuba, underlines the need to respect the national sovereignty of countries, non-interference in the internal affairs of states, and an end to unilateral coercive measures against developing countries.
