Pretoria, 3 June 2026. — The Cuban Ambassador, Fakri Rodríguez Pinelo, held a warm meeting with the leadership of the National Union of Mineworkers of South Africa (NUM) at the embassy.
During the meeting, NUM President Phillip Vilakazi expressed his solidarity and support for the Cuban people during these difficult times. For his part, the organisation’s General Secretary, Mpho Phakedi, condemned the recent measures adopted by the US government and called for continued efforts to achieve greater activism from the progressive left on the Cuban issue.
The Cuban Ambassador expressed his gratitude for the expressions of solidarity received and conveyed Cuba’s desire to strengthen ties with South Africa, in keeping with the historic friendship between the two peoples.
