Kingstown, June 24, 2026.— The Ambassador of Cuba to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Carlos Ernesto Rodríguez Etcheverry, held a cordial meeting with Vincentian journalist Ashford Peters, a well-known media professional with extensive experience in independent journalism and the coverage of national affairs. Peters has collaborated for many years with several local media outlets, particularly The News and iWitness News, and continues to play an active role in the country's press. He has also been a strong advocate for press freedom and the public's right to access information.
During the meeting, the Ambassador provided an update on the situation facing Cuba, highlighting the tightening of the United States' economic, commercial and financial blockade. He explained in particular the impact of the so-called energy blockade, which severely restricts Cuba's access to fuel, technology, equipment and financing for the country's national electricity system.
The Cuban diplomat outlined the consequences these restrictions have had on the living conditions of Cuban families, affecting electricity supply, transportation, food production, basic services, and the operation of essential sectors such as healthcare and education. He also highlighted the efforts undertaken by the Cuban Government to mitigate these challenges and preserve the main social achievements of the Revolution.
Mr. Peters expressed his appreciation for the information shared and his interest in gaining a first-hand understanding of the realities of Cuba and the challenges the country faces in the current international context.
The meeting took place in a cordial and respectful atmosphere and provided an opportunity to exchange views on the importance of responsible journalism and access to objective and well-contextualized information on major international issues (Embassy of Cuba to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines / Cubaminrex)
