President of Lithuania receives Credentials from the new Ambassador of Cuba

Helsinki, August 28th, 2018. The President of the Republic of Lithuania, Her Excellency Ms. Dalia Grybauskaitė, received on August 27th, in a solemn audience held at the Presidential Palace in Vilnius, the new Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, H.E. Mr. Eduardo Lazo Pérez, who presented the Credentials that accredit him in those functions.

During the meeting, the interlocutors highlighted the willingness of both countries to further develop the relations and political dialogue, both bilaterally and multilaterally, including the growing ties between the European Union and Cuba. In this sense, it was remarked the favorable framework provided by the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement signed between the European Union (EU) and Cuba, as well as the Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a mechanism for bilateral consultations between Cuba and Lithuania, signed in September 2016.

 

It was also mentioned the existing potential to strengthen bilateral exchanges in various sectors, such as trade, scientific-technological, academic and cultural, among others.

The Cuban diplomat, concurrent from Helsinki, used the occasion to thank Lithuania's position, shared with the other Member States of the European Union, against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the USA towards Cuba. Likewise, he updated the Lithuanian President on the most recent effects and damage caused to the Cuban people by that unjust policy.

During the conversation, the sympathy that Cuba arouses in Lithuania was also pointed out, expressed in the growing amount of Lithuanian tourists visiting the Caribbean island (Report: Embassy of Cuba in Finland).
