Statement of the Socialist Party (Zambia) on the coup in Bolivia

November 11, 2019. The Socialist Party in Zambia joins progressive movements and governments around the world in strongly condemning not only the coup d’état against the democratically elected government of Evo Morales in Bolivia but also the warrant issued for the arrest of Morales.

The US backed right wing imperialists are without a doubt angered by the outcome of the October 20 general election results which produced the fourth election loss of their parties to the Movement for Socialism.  For over a decade, the US embassy’s Center of Operations in La Paz has articulated the fact that it has two plans against progressive advancements in Bolivia – Plan A, the coup; Plan B, assassination of Morales. It is grotesque that in the 21st Century a country still aims at enslaving other nations in order to plunder their wealth.

The threats, intimidation and violence on several ministers and government officials, who have since been forced to resign and the series of violent racist and misogynist attacks against supporters and officials of MAS are a clear demonstration of the inhumane character of Imperialism.

We know that these violent right wing attacks we see in Bolivia are not isolated acts. They are an attack on the left wing advancements taking place across Latin America. This is clearly shown by the attacks on the Venezuelan, Cuban and Mexican embassies in the capital of Bolivia. It demonstrates how the US and other imperialist forces do not respect sovereignty and democratic process when they threaten imperialist interests, the neo liberal agenda and instead fights for the well being of workers and indigenous people.

The left wing government of Morales fought to reverse plunder and redistribute wealth to its people. This is against the logic of capitalist plunder. This is the reason why today a coup is underway – to deny the Bolivian masses their regained sovereignty and dignity. We strongly condemn the coup and declare our solidarity with the people of Bolivia who have made their democratic choice and who fight for peace, equality, the preservation of the lives of the Bolivian indigenous and the masses.

We are with Morales and with the popular masses in their struggle for justice, peace and equality.

Issued by Dr Fred M'membe (President) on behalf of the Central Committee of Socialist Party (Zambia).
